Sitting with the Silurian at the Linden Gallery
This armchair has been in Jackson’s family for three generations. The broad and sturdy arms are like padded loungeroom bleachers, and were often used to stage family photos, or to perch on while a family member held court with a ripping yarn. The seat is so deep that you can prop a baby there while grabbing a tea from the kitchen (quickly!). The armchair has been reupholstered in pieces of Jackson’s “Tiger Fish” tapestry that was woven on a jacquard loom by Flanders Tapestry in Belgium. The tapestry communicates the complex geometries of geological time, specifically the Silurian epoch of Melbourne. These one-off pieces upcycle treasured furniture with woven stories of our complex continent.
